Whenever I mention my disappointment with the fact that there are no lady superhero movies in production, someone invariably mentions Elektra and Catwoman. Like those two movies prove that people don’t want to see a movie starring a female superhero.
This excuse does not fly. Of the films pictured above, all were critically panned, and most did poorly at the box office*. The films which did do well were part of a established film series and even that didn’t help them all (Superman IV didn’t even meet it’s budget.) The embarrassing critical/box office reception of these films is never put on the fact that they have male leads, but Catwoman and Elektra are taken as proof that super-movies starring women just don’t work.
Fun fact: Despite the critical/box office failure of these movies every single one of them is getting or has gotten a reboot. Still no news on Wonder Woman.
*The Nick Fury movie was made-for-tv, but still painfully laughable
